How to Clean CSV Data Before Analysis
A repeatable checklist for whitespace, missing values, duplicate rows, headers, and type consistency.
Small inconsistencies in CSV exports can create large problems downstream. A repeatable cleanup checklist helps keep transformations transparent and reversible.
Preserve the original
Save a separate working copy and note what you intend to change. Do not overwrite the only copy of important source data.
Normalize carefully
Trim accidental whitespace, standardize headers, and inspect blank values. Do not collapse distinct categories or remove meaningful whitespace without checking.
Check duplicates and types
Decide what makes a row a duplicate before deleting anything. Confirm date formats, numeric units, leading zeros, and identifiers before analysis.
